How to Install Avast One Essential (Free)
Avast One Essential is a great free security tool, but because it is free, the installation process occasionally tries to include bundled software or browser extensions. Follow this guide to ensure you only install the antivirus protection you actually want.
Step 1: The Custom Install
Download the free installer from the official Avast website and open the file.
- When the first screen appears, do not click the giant "Install" button immediately.
- Look for a smaller link that says "Customize" or "Custom Installation" below it.
- Uncheck any boxes that offer to install external web browsers, secure search bars, or password managers unless you specifically want them.
- Click Install.
Step 2: The Initial Smart Scan
Once the installation finishes, Avast will prompt you to run your first "Smart Scan."
This scan will check for malware, but it will also scan for "Advanced Issues" like outdated drivers or registry errors. Important Note: Avast will find these advanced issues, but it will ask you to pay to fix them. You can simply ignore these warnings and close the window; your PC is still protected from actual viruses.
Managing the Free VPN
Avast One Essential includes a free VPN limited to 5GB per week. It is set to connect automatically when it detects you are on public Wi-Fi. If you don't want this feature running in the background, open the Avast dashboard, navigate to the VPN section, and toggle the automatic connection off.
